This report is Impossible to verify and is of Medium Priority. Here is why -
Fact Research, a fact checking initiative run by the Ministry of Mass Media has published on their Facebook (on 2nd August 2021) that only two ministerial officers attended Olympics, along with 21 other officials (perhaps representing the National Olympic Committee-NOC) and coaches. They have mentioned that those listed names have been extracted from a letter sent by the Ministry to the NOC, even though they have not published an image of the letter. The post further said that the Minister of Sports flew to Japan using his own money. There was no mention of other Ministers. Read more here: https://tinyurl.com/wza65322. However, the Minister of Sports mentioned in parliament on 5th August "Only the State Minister and I joined the Olympics delegation. Other Ministers visited Japan for their official ministerial duties. If your issue is with Minister Roshan Ranasinghe, his businesses are in Japan. He even bought my ticket." Minister Namal Rajapaksa's statement is in contradiction with what Cabinet Co-spokesperson Minister Keheliya Rambukwella stated on 27th July, saying that the State Ministers Thenuka Vidanagamage, D. V. Chanaka, and Roshan Ranasinghe visited Japan on funds provided by several sponsors from the private sector: https://tinyurl.com/58hybfea.
