This report is Confirmed true
and is of
Low Priority.
Here is why -
In Sri Lanka, the phrase “sugar scam” refers to the scandal surrounding the sudden large reduction in the Special Commodity Levy (SCL) on sugar imports, which took place on 13 October 2020. The SCL on sugar was reduced by 99.5% from LKR 50/kg to LKR 0.25/kg. Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa had stated on his Facebook page that the resulting loss of government revenue was LKR 20 billion, within 6 months from the reduction. An external fact checker has confirmed that this is true: http://factcheck.lk/claim/sajith-premadasa-12.
